Leaktech – Reducing Water Loss across Australia

Leaktech – Reducing Water Loss across Australia

Summer rapidly approaches with soaring temperatures expected. It is predicted that we are going to have a VERY dry summer. Climate records are again tipped to tumble.

The probability of underground supply networks / services failure is very high. No rain plus failing pipes = a critical situation. Utility owners are already talking about restrictions.

It is now more important than ever to ensure that there are no hidden or concealed leaks on properties you control (domestic and commercial).

Leaktech operates across Australia with our Head Office in Brisbane, Queensland. A recent internal study of our database has provided us with data which proves Climate Change is affecting underground assets at a higher rate than previous years.

From the study we have observed a rapid increase in callouts to unsourced water loss/leakage situations. Pipes are already failing due to heat and ground movement as soils dry out.

Leaktech’s records date back well over 30 years. We average 5,000-6000 visits a year to locate unidentified leaks.

This year (2023) our Data shows 6234 (22/09/2023) with just over 3 months to go in the 2023.

The increase in works may be subject to multiple causes such as

  • Climate Change;
  • Rapidly drying soil conditions:
  • Ageing assets;
  • Geographic location;
  • Pipe material;
  • Maintenance strategies;
  • Or…….Maybe we are good at what we do.

Using in house knowledge and exclusive technologies, Leaktech continues to demonstrate our commitment to excellence, expertise, capabilities, and overall knowledge within all aspects of Leak Detection across various water mains, piping networks and facilities around Australia.

Remember water is abrasive. A small leak quickly becomes a costly nightmare. Call the only Australian business with nearly 40 years of exclusive water leak detection experience.

Remember -If you have a tap leak leaking at 1 litre/minute, in a 24-hour period that equates to 1,440 litres per day. Think about 1 litre bottles of any liquid. You could be wasting that much liquid EVERY MINUTE. 1,440 litres per day is approximately daily average usage for 8 – 10 standard households.

If you think you may have a water leak please visit our Water Leak Detection page. There, we offer step test to assist you in determining if you potentially have a hidden water leak.

If for any reason you are unsure or suspect you do have a leak on your property, there are several methods which can be used to check for leaks. Leaktechs friendly team can discuss the most suitable approach to detect the leakage. All leaks if undetected in early stages can cost thousands of dollars in water loss over time and any repair works can add to that cost.

A check by us can provide peace of mind and save money.

Catching Leaks: Our Ongoing Pursuit of Precision

Catching Leaks: Our Ongoing Pursuit of Precision

Water Leaks in Schools can be expensive and often these issues are left until suitable time periods such as school holidays. Water is abrasive and the problem only gets worse. Expensive Treated water is increasingly wasted.

Recently, Leaktech was notified at short notice of an underground leak at a Bundaberg Region School. We were able to reorganize pre-booked less urgent jobs to attend promptly. The issue potentially effected the schools return date if the repair and remedial works could not be completed in time.

Leaktech deployed to site within 12 – 24 hours to commence the works.

School closures due to water related items occur from many different scenarios – heavy rainstorms, underground hidden leaks, hidden condensation, and excess humidity as well as burst pipes. These are not just costly to repair (including associated remedial works), but they can also take students away from the classroom. which we all know that during COVID-19.

Leaktech have the technology to assist across all the issues mentioned above including general maintenance / network condition assessments.

Due to Leaktech’s inhouse innovative technology, combined with over 30 years of knowledge and experience in all aspects of leak detection and underground service locations, our certified and trained technicians mobilised and precisely located the leak on the fire main, buried at 800mm.

The civil team on site exposed the pipe, repaired it at the exact location our technicians had previously identified as the leak.

Fire Hydrant Flow Testing

Fire Hydrant Flow Testing

Firelines and hydrants are routinely tested every 5 years to determine if there is adequate flow and pressure and that all parts are serviceable and easily located with quality markings.

In practice, network operators determine how often each grid/suburb will be tested.

To determine system and hydrant compliance, Flow Testing is performed by Leaktech to ensure fire hydrants can safely operate under real fire conditions. Flow testing involves using our calibrated flow and pressure monitoring devices and recording results.

Leaktech has a proven track record working with communities and water utilities to test thousands of hydrants safely and accurately across Australia.

RECENT CASE STUDY

Leaktech recently competed a large-scale project for a North Queensland council which consisted of 1250 Fire Hydrants across 11 suburbs and included general maintenance items such as:

  • Check and replace Valve Markers as required.
  • Check and replace Cat’s Eyes as required.
  • Check and replace Road Markers as required.
  • Maintenance / Repairs works as required.
  • Hydrant Pit Clean Outs
  • Flow and Pressure Testing of All Hydrants.
  • Report Results.

Some local staff in the work areas were recruited to work alongside Leaktech’s trained staff. Leaktech has a policy where possible to not only utilize local staff but also to teach certain skills which will remain in the regions for future benefit. These personnel were trained in Flow Testing and Leaktech’s internal policies and procedures. They always had support and supervision from our senior technicians and higher management.

Leaktech’s project planning involved working closely with the client’s representatives.

We safely and efficiently reduced the project timeframe from 8 weeks to 6 weeks and achieved practical completion.

Leaktech’s technicians safely, efficiently and accurately tested all hydrants in accordance with AS standards. Data was recorded digitally and all assets were located via GIS then relayed to the client in real time.

Traffic management was completed internally by our certified technicians which assisted to keep the project costs down.

The works could not have been achieved in the timeframe without the dedication and thoroughness of the teams involved in the works. Leaktech is proud of our staff and the results they achieve. Great feedback was received from a very satisfied client.

Keeping Hydrant and valve assets safe, visible, accessible and in good working order ensures Fire and Emergency Services can effectively respond to fires. This work also allows water utility owners to efficiently perform maintenance works and repairs to their networks.

Using our Ground Penetrating Radar and other technologies, Leaktech also identifies and locates lost or unidentified assets.

Leaktech’s management system and procedures mitigate project risks to “As Low As Reasonably Practicable” (ALARP) while our quality plans minimise the probability of damaging assets and property. Our workforce is a multi-disciplined / skilled team with capabilities in leak detection, service location (including GPR), flow testing and many other capabilities to ensure each project’s success. Leaktech operate across all areas, States and regions throughout Australia.

Please feel free to contact one of our friendly team to discuss any of your project requirements.

Reducing Water Loss Throughout NSW

Reducing Water Loss Throughout NSW

Using the latest tools and exclusive technology Leaktech have again demonstrated our commitment to excellence, expertise, increasing capabilities and overall knowledge within all aspects of leak detection across various water mains, piping networks and facilities around regional areas of NSW under the DPIE Water Efficiency Program.

The Goal

Leaktech’s Primary KPI was to address network condition and water loss across extensive areas throughout regional New South Wales.

The Method

Over a 2-month period, Leaktech completed leakage surveys across six different shires in Western New South Wales. We surveyed in detail twenty-two individual towns.

The Outcome

Leaktech surveyed in excess of 900km of pipeline network and various facilities which have resulted in our skilled technicians locating a staggering water loss of over 1600 litres per minute (1.72 million litres a day) of treated water with over 400 confirmed leaks.

This was indeed a worthwhile exercise for our Government clients following the focus on utilities and water loss because of recent sustained drought conditions.

General Comments

Leaktech was proud to partner with DPIE on the regional work delivering much-needed services for this vital project. The beneficiaries include the local regional shires who do brilliant work supplying critical services to residents in often harsh conditions with limited resources.

Both internal and external water loss across all regions of New South Wales continues to be an ongoing issue, especially as we anticipate dryer times ahead.

Leaktech

The above figures only represent large-scale leakage survey works carried out by Leaktech during this period and do not include our general day to day leak detection works or other project works during the period.

Our trained technicians carried out extensive works during the same period in many other locations for various clients.

Leaktech’s technicians have the training, knowledge, and technology to detect even the smallest leaks within the industry. Even small leaks account for a substantial dollar value over time if undetected.  We are very proud of the commitment and skills demonstrated daily by our staff.

As a result of recent heavy rain events, many Australian east coast dam levels are at the highest levels they have been in a long time, so let’s keep it that way and not waste much needed treated water. It is now more important than ever to ensure that there are no hidden or concealed leaks on properties you control (domestic and commercial).

If for any reason you suspect a leak on your property, there are several methods which can be used to check for leaks. Leaktech’s friendly team can discuss the most suitable approach to detect the leakage. All leaks if undetected at their early stages can cost thousands of dollars in water loss over time and any severe repair works can add to that cost. These costs can be avoided.

Remember, water is abrasive. A small leak quickly becomes a costly nightmare. Call the only Australian business with 35 plus years of exclusive water leak detection experience.

Flow Testing of Fire Lines

Flow Testing of Fire Lines

It is recommended that Firelines (Hydrants) should be routinely tested every 5 years although especially if there is no pressing need to test a specific hydrant or if test data less than 5-year-old is available from an adjacent hydrant within the same grid.

It is entirely up to the network’s owner how often each grid / suburb requires testing, although flow testing is performed to ensure utility owned fire hydrants can safely operate under fire conditions.

Leaktech have a proven track record working with the community and water utilities to safely and accurately test thousands of hydrants across Australia. Recently Leaktech have competed a Project in Far North Queensland which consisted of 2166 Fire Hydrants across 7 suburbs and included general maintenance items such as:

• Valve Markers
• Cat’s Eyes
• Road Markers
• Maintenance / Repairs works
• Hydrant Pit Clean Outs

Through project planning and working closely with our client, we safely and efficiently reduced the project timeframe from 12 weeks to 6 weeks and received practical completion. Leaktech’s trained and experienced technicians safely, efficiently, and accurately tested all hydrants recording all data and updating all asset locations via GIS. All traffic management was completed internally by our trained technicians, which allowed us to keep project costs down.

The works could not have been achieved without the dedication and thoroughness of the teams involved in the works.

Keeping Hydrant and valve assets safe, accessible and in good working order ensures the fire brigade can effectively respond to fires and it also allows water utility companies to perform maintenance works, repairs to networks and also identify and locate lost or unidentified assets.

Leaktech’s Management System and Procedures mitigate all project risks to “As Low As Reasonably Practicable” (ALARP) while our Quality Plans minimise the probability of damaging assets and property.
